Billing Clarification for HCPCS Codes G2023 and G2024- COVID-19 Specimen Collection

Audience: Skilled Nursing Facilities and Certified Home Health Care Agencies

In our communication to certified home health care agencies dated April 22, 2020, we included Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes G2023 and G2024 on a list of visit codes that could be used during the COVID-19 state of emergency.

These codes should not have been included on the list, as they are specimen collection codes for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 that should only be billed by laboratories. HCPCS codes G2023 and G2024 should not be billed by certified home health care agencies or skilled nursing facilities.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Thank you for the quality care and service you provide to our valued members, especially during this challenging time in health care.
